The food in Mosul's best restaurants is magnificent - Syrian-style salad dips of hummous and cucumber chopped with yoghurt, a plate of olives and slices of pickled cucumber and turnip, and entire roast chickens on beds of rice, washed down with thinned yoghurt.
Our biggest meal cost 10,000 dinars ($7.70) for three people - I've got to keep reminding you that this would be two or three months' salary for most Iraqis. My Information Ministry escort, Mohammad, ate like he hadn't eaten for a week, which probably wasn't quite true but he might well not have had meat for a while. Omar, my driver, a quiet and rather austere man, ate only some of his chicken so Mohammad ate most of that as well. I paid, of course. |
